UNESCO clears Machu Picchu from endangered list

After extensive structure work to better protect the Machu Picchu Sanctuary, UNESCO removed Machu Picchu from the endangered heritage list. An inspection team visited Machu Picchu on February 5th and approved the progress made at the Inca citadel. A complete report will be issue within the next few weeks outlining a long term plan to continue preserving the Inca’s sacred city.

“There are significant developments and with this they will reduce to a minimum the risk that Machu Picchu enter the list of world heritage in danger,” said César Moreno Triana, director of the advisory mission of UNESCO.

The team will come back in February of 2017 to verify that improvements continue and Machu Picchu will remain open and available for generations to come.
